Varenna

A village reflected on the lake

Varenna is an ancient village of fishermen situated on the east coast of the Lake of Como. The particularities of this wonderful place are its little streets which interlace like a net until the lake.

Also the colorful houses are very characteristic  and they reflect on the transparent water of the lake creating an amazing effect of lights and colors.

Varenna
is also celebrated for its luxurious villas, above all Villa Monastero, whose name refers to its ancient origins as Ancient Female Cistercian monastry. Today the villa hosts a lot of national and international  conventions and, here there is a museum-house, where visitors can admire ancient furniture. The villa is surrounded by  a fascinating botanical garden with a lot of rare exotic species organized along a 2km long itinerary.

The visit to the Castello di Vezio is also very interesting. It is a medieval castle which now shows itself as a sighting tower (available with a little drawbridge) situated on a promontory, which in the past, because of its strategic position, represented the strategic point for the sighting of the enemies. The peculiarity of the castle is the presence of some statues representing ghosts scattered in the huge garden which generate a unique atmosphere. Visitors can also participate in schooling demonstration of hawks with expert hawks trainers and visit occasional expositions set up in the interior of the castle.

Varenna is the perfect city if you want to spend a day or an holiday in complete relax, walking along the romantic coasts of the lake and visiting the wonderful historical-cultural attractions.
