Tremezzo

A middle ground between lake and mountains

The name of this village is due to its position, in fact, it is a sort of “medial land” situated between the Pianura Padana and the Canton Grigioni crossing.

The city is characterized by eighteenth-century villas, for example Villa Carlotta, and their luxuriant gardens which alternate with the water of the lake and the rocks of the mountains. The temperate climate facilitates the growth of typically Mediterranean plants, such as lemons and olive trees, so, it looks like a Mediterranean city in the north.  Furthermore, when foreign nobles arrived here, they imported different exotic plants such as palms, azaleas, hortensias and camellias coming from far.
It is absolutely worth the tour of the villas, starting from Villa Carlotta and continuing with Villa Melzi in Bellagio and Villa Monastero in the town of Varenna (it will be possible to plan a more convenient starting point from one of the three villas).

The wonderful and uncontaminated nature and the luxurious Villas, make Tremezzo a charming destination described and appreciated by the writer Stendhal
